Munro Compleatists

Those who complete (compleat!) the Munros can record this fact and receive the magic number by writing in to The Clerk of The List (See here). Additionally, a list of current compleaters is published annually in the SMC Journal.

Stob Coire Sgreamhach - 15 August 2015

On Saturday August 15th 2015, I climbed Stob Coire Sgreamhach in Glencoe, my last Munro, at the grand age of 66. I climbed my first Munro, Schiehallion, in December 1971 while at University in Edinburgh so it has very much been the ambition of a lifetime. The Tables have changed a few times since I started, hence a “new” Munro turned out to be my last.

My companion (and photographer) was Chris Langman (Compleatist #2548) who has encouraged me over the last few years and without whom I'm sure I would not have finished the round. I am wearing a Munro tartan waistcoat for the occasion, hand made by Chris's partner Sue. The wee hill in the background is Bidean nam Bian which we climbed after having champagne and a whisky on Sgreamhach. We saw our own "Glories" on Bidean - this sight could not be attributed to the alcohol and rounded off a great and memorable day.

My Munro #100 was Sgurr nan Coireachan in 1981 and #200 was Eididh nan Clach Geala in 2006. One reason for the long duration has been bringing up a family of three sons, one of whom, Jonathon, has climbed 83 Munros, mostly with me. I hope that one day he will also join the list of Compleatists.
